Best Leather Sewing Machines

Not every heavy-duty sewing machine is necessarily good on leather, making this selection more difficult. If you are don’t know how to choose the right machine for your leathercraft, keep reading this article. We have searched and reviewed 27 of the best leather sewing machines for you.

closeup flange best leather sewing machine verycreate.com
Commercial grade or Industrial grade sewing machines are best for heavy leather

If you need a sewing machine for many different uses and fabrics and plan on also using it for lightweight leather, we’ve got excellent suggestions for you. Keep in mind that you will need to purchase sewing machine needles specifically for leather, a special presser foot and use heavyweight threads in addition to having an ideal sewing machine.

If however, you are planning on making lots of leather items of medium to heavy thickness of leather, you’ll need to invest in a machine with the guts to handle industrial or heavy-duty use and one that has a mechanical walking foot to keep thick layers of leather from shifting while being stitched. These powerhouse machines come with their own table and special motor custom made to maximize the sewing machine output. All the professional machines we recommend come ready to use. Watch out for ‘low cost deals’ on the internet for professional machines: they most often come disassembled with no instructions.  Hiring someone experienced enough to do it right may wipe out any possible savings!

Semi-industrial machines are available that are more portable and bridge the needs of the casual home sewer and the daily-use leather professional.  These units do not come with a table, nor do they require a servo motor to run. Some have mechanical walking feet mechanisms and some do not.

Leather sewing machines are long-term investments. If you use a top-quality model, you may not need to change and replace it for decades. With all this variety, deciding which meets your needs is the first step to selecting the best leather sewing machine.

Things to Consider Before Buying a Leather Sewing Machine

Whether you are picking any model from the above list or searching outside of it, take these features into account.

closeup suede sewing best leather sewing machine verycreate.com
Heavyweight thread  and a leather needle are necessary for sewing on leather

Purpose of Buying

Before anything else, you need to know what items you wish to sew and how often you intend to use it.  A hobbyist will need a different machine than a professional working in a commercial environment. Similarly, a seasoned leathercrafter will need something different than what a first-timer would require.

Stitching Details

If you are buying the sewing machine for non-commercial uses, then any speed from 200-1500 stitches per minute will be more than enough. However, machines with 1000+ stitches per minute are a must for commercial and industrial settings. You can get machines with stitching speed north of 5000 stitches per minute as well.  Often, it is easier to control the quality of your stitches when you are learning with a variable speed control feature.

You can buy lightweight leather sewing machines with a range of stitches including a set of simple, stretch, and decorative stitches. This stitch variety is usually not available in heavy-duty industrial machines.  Keep in mind that we have mentioned if the machines on our list of recommendations have an integrated mechanical walking foot feature. These will give the very best performance when stitching multiple layers of leather.  In addition, some sewing machines not intended for leather may leave teeth marks in the backside of the leather as the feed dogs push and pull leather through the sewing area.  If you are working on double thicknesses of leather, you’ll need a machine intended for work on leather to avoid this unsightly casualty.

Machines with adjustable stitch length are ideal for leather because different leather accessories require gaping between stitches.  6mm stitch length option or more is best.

Motor Type

Leather sewing machines primarily feature clutch motors. These motors are suitable for thick leather but produce considerable noise. You can also get some models that feature servomotors. These sewing machines lie at a slightly higher price point but produce less noise and works great on light and medium leather variants.

Power Consumption

Sewing machines labeled with “industrial” and “commercial-grade” tags consume a lot of energy. Keep this factor in mind if you are buying a machine for home crafting and non-commercial projects.  They are also large machines requiring a big footprint in your work area.

Also factor in the accessories that come with a sewing machine. For instance, a worktable, extension table, set of needles, feet, and bobbins are part of the deal with any brand-new leather sewing machine. For general home sewing machines, a non-stick presser foot will make a difference when sewing leather, as it keeps somewhat sticky leather from dragging on the plate.

Why you need a mechanical walking foot:

5 Things to look for when buying an industrial sewing machine:

Tips for sewing on leather with a home sewing machine:

Can one use a regular sewing machine for leather?

Yes, you can use a regular sewing machine for sewing leather but only after changing its needle and the presser foot first. You’ll need a machine with a strong enough motor and a presser foot that raises high enough to allow mult-layers of thick material to pass through. If you intend to sew very thick leather or sew leather for extended periods of time, you’ll need to upgrade to a semi-industrial or industrial sewing machine to save wear and tear on your regular machine.

What is the right stitching speed for leather?

There is no set standard for leather stitching speed. It depends on the control and experience of the sewer. A seasoned sewer can easily control 4-figure stitching speeds. Meanwhile, beginners need to start with lower stitching speeds to first develop better control.

Does a presser foot matter in how a machine sews the leather?

Yes, the right presser foot is integral for proper leather stitching. Silicon or Teflon presser foot is often considered suitable for leather items because of their sticky surface. For layered leather items, sewing machines with walking foot mechanism works better.
