I am excited to present to you step by step instructions of how to draw a dilophosaurus. I have pulled together a step by step process with 5 in depth steps to help you in your next dinosaur drawing project!
Ever since I was a teenager when the original Jurassic Park movie came out, I have been infatuated with this dinosaur. The way Jurassic Park portrayed the dilophosaurus is a made up fantasy but the dinosaur did live many years ago during the Early Jurassic time period. But regardless, I am amazed by its little strength and hunting prowess. I have heard some people call dilophosaurus by the name dilophosaur which can be a short name.
To begin drawing the dilophosaurus, it is important to use a new pencil and a good eraser. I typically use a new pencil when I begin a new design project because it puts me in the right state of mind. I also have a solid pencil sharpener handy because that helps keep me focused versus walking around my house to sharpener my pencil each time my pencil dulls.
Jump Ahead To:
Step 1 – Drawing The Dilophosaurus Outline:
Use a full sized 8.5″ x 11″ sheet of white paper and begin by drawing your main shapes and outlines for the head, crest on the head, neck, body, arms, legs, and tail.
Step 2 – Add In Rough Detail of the Dilophosaurus
At this point you now have a rough outline and need to start adding in some addition details. No need for this step of your Dilophosaurus to actually be perfect at all. This is still a rough step so treat it as an opportunity to add the character you want it to have.
I like to start by adding in the arms, legs, tail, and neck to start to give it shape and character. I don’t like to start with the head because I like to save that until I see how the body will shake out.
Step 3 – Add In Head Detail Of The Dilophosaurus
The head will make or break your art. So be sure to take your time here.
The pencil should be sharpened and of course feel free to go outside the lines of your original head shape. The head shape in Step 1 was just a guideline and a starting point.
I also like to add in more detail for the furled neck. This is the feature that is most likely not true life but one the key features from Jurassic Park the movie.
Step 4 – Add Further Detail and Erase Original Lines
Now that the body is structured and created, I like to finalize the detail for the head and neck. One of my favorite details to add are the teeth–it really is the key feature in my opinion. The shading and overall tone of the drawing will follow after the head.
I also like to begin erasing the un-needed original shapes and outlines used in Step 1. We don’t want the final drawing of the dilophosaur to look as though we kept in the original lines and outlines.
Step 5 (Final Step) – Add Shading, Texture, and Color Details
Every drawing needs to be finalized with shading to fully add the dimensional feel to the art. In the real world, objects will all have dimension and we like to bring the same feeling to our dilophosaurus drawings.
Add the shading the backside arms and legs. Also, add shading to the underbelly.
Add the final touches with camouflage coloring on the back of the dilophosaurus. We don’t know for sure what kind of coloring the dinosaurs actually had but I like to imagine they were able to easily blend into the jungle and other plant life to make hunting for food easier and more efficient.
