EASELS

Easels generally come in one of these categories and which one you choose will depend on your needs:

  • Table Top Easels
  • Outdoor (also called Plein Air Easels or Pochade Boxes) Easels and Plein Air Umbrellas
  • Portable Easels and
  • Studio or Floor Easels

My recommendations for an easel for painting in descending order of preference:

1.  Meeden Heavy Duty Extra Large H-Frame Studio Easel

Honestly, I wish this had been available when I bought my easel. This one gives better features for the same price as mine and has less likelihood of tray tilt.

>>Check Price On Amazon<<

  • Hinges from the center of the support, not the floor pedestal, so that it can be adjusted to any angle, including horizontally for watercolors and varnishing and forward 5 degrees for pastel.
  • Solid beechwood construction.
  • Great tray size
  • 3 year warranty
  • Four 360 degree swivel wheels
  • Does not fold away for storage
  • Tray support can be lowered to 23 inches from the floor to a height of 50 inches via the brass ratchet system.
  • It’s a great easel for a fairly low price point.

2. Meeden Deluxe Crank Adjusting Easel, Master H-Frame Studio

This beautifully crafted easel ticks a lot of boxes. An elegant and lifetime easel.  If the price point is not that much of a consideration, this easel might just be the ideal lifetime easel. That being said, it will not adjust to horizontal and it only holds one painting at a time.

  • It has convenient 2 Side storage drawers
  • Beautiful Rosewood finish
  • Large size
  • Will not fold away for storage
  • Crank handle folds up and away
  • It will spin a full 360 degrees with swivel wheels that have locking brakes
  • Adjusts to canvases up to 83 inches tall using the wonderfully engineered silent crank

  • Capable of holding two canvases simultaneously
  • Canvas resting shelf area may tilt out of horizontal alignment
  • Watch out for the nuts and bolts on the two wheels, those would skin my ankles for sure
  • A solid sturdy and adjustable easel that extends to accommodate a canvas up to 77″ high
  • The easel can be adjusted up to slightly past a full vertical incline, which makes it easier to do pastel and portrait work or depending on the need, it can be tilted all the way down to a flat horizontal table angle, which is ideal for working with watercolors, varnishing or doing paint pouring
  • If you don’t need a tray below your painting area, this is a great price for an easel for painting

This is the easel that I own. With the exception of the horizontally tilting canvas support that I mention in the video at the end of this easel has served me well.  I do wish it had locking 360 degree swivel wheels though and the ability to adjust completely horizontal.

  • It is nicely made and very solid
  • It unscrews and collapses for storage
  • Perfect sized shelf under the canvas support
  • All my clumsiness will not tip this puppy over, thankfully. Yet, if I need to, I can move it with one hand
  • Very versatile height adjustment capabilities

  • Large storage shelf under the easel that is out of the way from where you will stand, sit or walk while painting
  • Fully adjustable for pastel, watercolor or oils
  • Will raise to a height of 70 inches
  • Does not fold flat for storage

8. Meeden Studio H-Frame Easel with Art Supply Storage Drawer

The least versatile floor easel, but with the most storage.  The height is restricted by the storage box, so that you can not sit down and lower the painting low enough, which means that you are required to stand or sit on a high stool while painting.

  •  Not angle adjustable, which means you don’t get to choose how vertical your canvas will be

9. T-SIGN 66 Inches Reinforced Artist Easel Stand

The benefit of this travel easel is that it can double as a display easel for finished artwork in art shows.  I have one which I use for attending workshops in case the classroom isn’t set up with an easel that I can use, or if I want to take an easel on an airplane or sling something uber lightweight over my shoulder like a purse.

  • Telescoping legs like a photographers tripod that will adjust to any height
  • If you are going to use this outdoors or near lots of people, you’ll need to attach a bag of rocks or something to keep it stable. It will get knocked over easily because it is so light-weight
  • The only way to guarantee that the canvas support ‘shelf’ is horizontal is to adjust the telescoping legs until it reaches horizontal, which can get quite fiddly

  • Sturdy
  • Top anchor on the mast
  • Will not travel across the table as easily as easels with flimsy legs
  • It will accommodate up to a 21 inch high canvas
  • I especially like that it has a solid piece of wood for the canvas to rest on, which will eliminate wobble and give support to your painting surface as you paint
  • It too won’t adjust forward for pastel use

Please watch my bonus videos below and read up on my insider tips to see the issue with tabletop easels!  Tabletop easels really need their own department but here we go:

>>Check Price On Amazon<<

  • Sturdy construction
  • Anchor piece on the mast
  • H support bars for the canvas to rest on
  • This little guy isn’t going to scoot across the table as it doesn’t rest on tripod legs
  • Accommodates a surprising 23 inch tall canvas
  • Folds flat and compact for storage
  • It doesn’t look capable of standing totally vertical
  • Will not tilt forward enough to be good for pastels

13. Tangkula Tabletop H-Frame Wood Easel

I own a dozen of these for teaching in a classroom setting.  What I don’t like is how high the painting surface rests on the easel at it’s lowest point. This raises the painting up off the table surface and is too close to kinking my neck sometimes. It feels a little too tippy at times.  It makes a nice table display for finished artwork and takes up very little square footage of space on my table.

14. Arteza Wood Tabletop Easel

This might be a good choice because of the storage drawer.  As long as the table itself is level, your painting support will be too.  Some tabletop easels with storage boxes are so tall because of the depth of the box (which brings me back to the fact that it could be too high).  I don’t know if the shallow storage box is sufficiently deep enough to store much besides brushes and the tiniest tubes of paint. It doesn’t look capable of standing totally vertical.

  • No top anchor support or mast
  • It’s not going to travel across the table as you paint because it rests on a large flat box, not three legs

17. Artlicious 14″ A Frame Wooden Easel

This economy easel has a strap that you can manually tighten to keep the back support from collapsing altogether. While it looks like it could be adjustable from an angle, the closer the legs get to the canvas area, (closer to vertical presentation), the more unstable it will get. Which means that you’ll be painting at an incline, instead of nearly vertical. That would drive me nuts, not to mention play havoc with your observation of perspective.

  • Budget-priced
  • Easily folds nearly flat for storage
  • Maximum size it will accommodate is 14 inches, so you are really limited to small canvases

  • It will scoot across the table with slight pressure

Pro Tips and Insider Information

Probably the most valuable information in our article is right here.

I’ll be honest. Tabletop easels are my last choice.  Here’s why.

Check out this video of some of my own tabletop easels:

https://youtu.be/3-XKmKkpp64

There are other reasons I don’t like them as well as flimsiness.

Here is what your neck is going to look like if you are painting on a table with  anything other than a small-sized canvas:

perscription for a headache or damage to spine Best Easel for Painting verycreate.com
The wrong easel for painting is a prescription for a headache and damage to the spine.

Tabletop easels will work for a few minutes on a large canvas like the woman is painting above, but any longer than that and you’ll be getting a headache and compression to your spine.  Trust me, this leads to numbness, bad posture, and in my own personal case, troubles with esophageal spasms when eating.  Combine this with working on the computer (we all have bad posture when working on the computer), and it spells a physical health disaster.  You need an easel that will keep your neck in alignment and your head facing forward.

That being said, there are times when a tabletop easel is the only option.  In a classroom lacking floor space, for example, or in a small home.

classroom Best Easel for Painting verycreate.com
For crowded classroom use, collapsable tabletop easels are mandatory

Here are some fairly good to not so good options for painting on a tabletop.  A big priority should be stability.  You don’t want to have to hold onto the easel with one hand while you paint, and you don’t want to be restricted to small, delicate strokes either.

A top anchor on the mast is a great idea as you will be moving around (getting up out of your chair) every now and then and an anchor will help keep your wet painting from being accidentally knocked off the easel.

Many times it is necessary to have a very light-weight easel that is good to put in a suitcase or travel for extreme portability.  That’s where lightweight aluminum easels really come in handy.

Easels for painting outdoor are quite a different kettle of fish.

plein air french easel Best Easel for Painting verycreate.com
Plein air easels can double for studio easels for small works

Please read my thorough article on outdoor easels here.  It’s a really big topic with lots to consider and I really break it all down for you.  You will find options that will work for tabletops as well as for out in the field.

Here is a short video of the two studio easels that I own plus a portable aluminum.  I point out the shortcomings of each easel.

https://youtu.be/rl99xm6sDyw

As you can see, there are some pluses and a few minuses with the easels that I own!   If cost were not an issue, I would, of course, choose a top of line studio crank easel!! Man, those crank operated easels are the best!   Someday when I have a dedicated studio space, I’ll spring for one!!

Here are some things to consider in selecting your easel for painting:

  1. SIZE CAPABILITIES

If you don’t have a large designated studio space, then you may be limited somewhat by how large you can paint.  If you have room though, make sure to keep your options open for a large painting someday.  You will be surprised how often you’ll want to create something on a large scale!  Then a sturdy, non-tipping easel will be a necessity.  The anchor on the mast is especially important, as is the ability to keep the painting horizontal with the tray or canvas support ledge.

versatility large canvas Best Easel for Painting verycreate.com
You never know when you might decide to paint a very large canvas. A good floor easel will give you great versatility and stability.

2. STURDINESS

Sturdy easels have an H shape, instead of one center support.  This allows for wider canvases and greater stability from tipping.

I’ve found that when the sliding tray/support is nestled inside the outer frame area ( as opposed to sliding up and down on top of the outer H frame of the easel), the tray support will remain completely horizontal.  In my demo video clip above, you can see how my horizontal canvas tray/support slightly moves out of horizontal alignment with just a little bit of pressure from my hand. That is because on my floor easel, the canvas support/tray is only connected to the center mast by one handle tightener.  It really needs one on each end or a metal track in the middle like a crank easel.  This drives me bonkers.

The design below is much better. The support/tray movement area is nestled INSIDE the outer supports, therefore keeping it from twisting or tilting out of horizontal alignment.

close up crank Best Easel for Painting verycreate.com
Notice how the canvas support shelf is connected to the crank area inside the side supports of the easel. No problems with leveling here!

A good easel is not only solid, but it allows for easy adjustability.  Notice that the center support has a metal track that the crank handle allows the tray to raise and lower on.  If that center panel does not have a metal track, the tray is going to drag on the side of the easel wood and the friction may make it more difficult to move up and down.

Also, please be aware that tripod legged easels are not as stable as platform-based easels.

3. EASE OF USE

The last thing you want to bother with is having your easel get in your way while you paint.  Too deep of a tray, bulky leg supports, an overly large drawer, or large wheels can be a hazzard if you are a klutz like me.

Some easels come with locking wheels, which gives some degree of mobility, unless you are painting on carpeted floors. tray in the way Best Easel for Painting verycreate.com

This is a disaster in waiting for elbows in the paint, not to mention the difficulty in getting in close for tight work on the bottom area of the painting surface. There is no way this artist could use a mahl stick either! And that tray is in the way.  I do like a tray under the support area for the convenience of laying down brushes, my glasses or whatnot, but it has to be more inconspicuous or narrow.

4. BEAUTY

Hey, I’m an artist! I appreciate that I could use my easel to display my art for a home gallery if needed.  If you don’t have a designated studio room, then your easel will double as a piece of furniture.

elegant easel Best Easel for Painting verycreate.com
Easels can be used as a display for finished artwork when not in use

5. ADAPTABILITY

Some easels will tilt fully horizontal for ease of applying a varnish or doing watercolors.  At the very least, consider buying an easel that will fully adjust the canvas support to many heights (high and low), and have the ability to tilt at multiple degrees. I regret buying an easel that does not give me the flexibility to tilt the canvas flat for varnishing or for washes of color.  It just didn’t occur to me!  I thought I’d transport the painting to a table and that would be fine. Of course, I do that now, but I sure wish I had the option to not disturb the painting when it is safely secured to the easel.

I move the angle of my easel angle depending on sunlight glare,  comfort in body and hand position and if I’m working in paints or pastels.  (Pastels need a forward tilt slightly so that the pastel dust falls off the paper, not sliding down the paper as you work).  The most useful easels allow for pivot adjusting however it is hinged.

Some easels have two-story platforms so that you can paint two canvases at once –  or mount your tablet above the painting area for referring to your reference photo. That’s a great space saver!   I have to use my tablet on a special tripod mounting bracket and it would be so much more convenient to have it placed above my painting for easy viewing.

Some easels are extra large to accommodate very tall or heavy canvases or supports. If you intend to paint large canvases or even mural sized boards, you’ll need a large or heavy duty easel.

Watch out for the easels that have very limited adjustments, as some of them require you to stand to paint. You will want to lower the tray/support so that you have the option to sit in a chair (not a stool) while painting …especially if you can’t stand for hours at a time.  You may be in perfect health now, but trust me, there will be the occasional sprained knee, back injury or who knows what else, and you do not want your painting time to be eliminated because your easel demands that you stand up the entire time.

close up of expensive crank easel in use Best Easel for Painting verycreate.com
This easel is built to last with a metal track that the crank uses to raise and lower the canvas support. It also has metal reinforcements in weaker areas and is too large to move often.

The most expensive artist’s easels can run close to $2,000 and are designed to last for generations with daily use.

Here’s a sample of the most deluxe artist easels for the serious artist:
